How to cut a watermelon…the easy way.
I don’t know about y’all, but the Callahans (well, W and me) love a nice, juicy piece of watermelon. My parents always gave us huge slices when we were growing up. Anytime you wanted a piece, you’d have to drag out the whole watermelon from the fridge, cut a slice, then deal with the clean up. As an adult, I decided that there had to be a better way, a lazy way. A way to just grab a piece from the fridge, and not deal with the mess each time.
So here is how to cut a watermelon…the easy way. This is for lazy people that just know themselves well enough to know that they aren’t going to be hoisting the whole watermelon out of the refrigerator when they want a quick snack. Also, using a giant knife makes me feel like I’m on Top Chef, and I like feeling like I’m on Top Chef. (Affiliate link below!)
Easy Steps
The first thing you’re going to do is cut off each end of the watermelon. Cut it enough that you’re to the juicy red part. Nobody likes the light pink part of a watermelon. Nobody. You will quickly know if you made a good watermelon choice or not.
Start shaving. Again, cut in far enough to get off the white and the light pink. Basically, we are just wanting to leave a block of red watermelon. Also, don’t cut yourself. You don’t want people knowing that you’re not actually Top Chef material, do you? (Link for cutting board below)
Now, you’re left with a big old hunk of watermelon. Glorious, am I right?
Turn it on its side and cut it into nice big slices. Then use that big knife and slice it vertically, then finish up with a nice long horizontal slice. Y’all. It leaves the perfect hand-sized pieces of watermelon to grab out of the fridge. The rinds are long gone (trash, compost bin, or out in the woods for the critters), and all you’ve got left is delicious watermelon to snack on. Seriously the perfect size for you and your kiddos!
