Things have changed a bit since I was on here last. The boys are back in school/daycare, and I am back in the classroom. So things may shift a bit here. Instead of posts just being what’s going on at home, there is also going to be some classroom ideas in the mix. I am currently teaching 2nd grade, but have also taught 4K and 1st. Today I am here with the perfect science experiment for kids!
After a week full of standardized testing, we decided to have a 2nd grade STEAM day focused around solids, liquids, and gases. I instantly thought of my favorite science experiment for kids, and with the the tried and true balloon experiment. This one is always a favorite for both kids and adults!
All you need:
- balloons
- some type of bottle
- white vinegar
- baking soda
- funnels (not required, but make it a lot easier!)
Super simple steps:
- fill the bottle up about halfway with vinegar
- use the funnel to fill the balloon about halfway with baking soda (I used a paper clip to kind of push the baking soda through the funnel)
- attach the mouth of the balloon to the top of the bottle and start dumping the baking soda in
- ENJOY!
That is literally it. That’s all you have to do! This is the perfect experiment for teaching solids, liquids, and gases to your class. It is also the perfect experiment to do just because it is fun! When I did this with my class, I had them use the hypothesis/observation sheet that is FREE below (or you can view here on TPT).
After doing it at school, I brought it home and did it with the boys. We made it a little more spooky by adding a jack-o-lantern face to an orange balloon. There were a LOT of giggles.
Enjoy the giggles and the messes that are sure to happen, and have fun!
